Open Access medical publishing: which model?

Posted by : scribblers on : August 16, 2014 at 2:11 pm

The medical publishing industry has explored Open Access for some time amid calls for publically sponsored academic research to be freely available. But what is the best model for Open Access?

The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) proposed new model licences. But a call to use Creative Commons licences for academic work is gathering pace, with more than 75 organisations signed up for a global coalition in favour of Creative Commons. The organisations include heavy hitters from publishing, education and government.

The coalition believes Creative Commons gives a widely used framework and asks the STM to withdraw their new model licences.

STM has responded to the coalition’s concern.

It will be interesting to see how the debate pans out.
